GBI’s New Cross-Belt tray sorter incorporates many of the latest innovations together with GBI's proven programming and controls to provide a reliable, high capacity and flexible system. GBI's new Cross-Belt sorter features contactless induction motors to drive the cars and wireless infrared communications to transmit on-the-fly instructions reducing wear and maintenance requirements.

Each "smart car" is equipped with a central processing unit that is programmed to perform a myriad of dynamic functions such as belt acceleration, turn rate, distance and timing in a multitude of combinations as dictated by circumstances. Among our many features are automatic induction, full tracking, weigh-in-motion and dynamic deployment.

GBI’s cross-belt tray sorter is capable of sorting products weighing up to 100 pounds, and is a perfect supplement to GBI's line of Tilt Tray, Bomb Bay (Carrier-Based), Hanging Garment, and Pick to Light sortation systems.

Wireless Power (option)

The GBI crossbelt carrier standard means of power transfer is to employ industry proven and mature active travelling conductors along a continuous track. However, with GBI’s wireless power option the carriers can receive their power over air by utilizing the latest technology using inductive energy transfer. There are no wires between cars and all power is transmitted without contact between the track and the carriers. The result is little or no maintenance costs, long life cycle, and superior reliability over traditional methods.

Automatic Product Loading

GBI provides automatic product loading by utilizing a series of metered induction belts to load the sorter from a stationary operator placement onto the moving cross-belt. Each cross-belt car is programmed to pull in the product from the metered belt onto the cross-belt car.

Cross-Belt "Smart-Car" Unit

Each cross-belt unit is a smart unit with its own smart controls. These smart cars enable GBI to program different load speed characteristics as well as several product dispatching speeds. Each unit receives its instructions on-the-fly from the sorter server.

Custom Configured Chutes

Cross-Belt Sorters deliver items into chutes, bins, or even directly into boxes as shown. Floor, Wall and Ceiling mountings are all available to fit your needs.

Chutes will be configured to suit your product and work flow. GBI will provide all the design services you need for a fully integrated system, including interfaces to your legacy equipment, such as take-away conveyors.  You get a complete sortation solution

Configurations & Layouts

A wide variety of configurations and layouts are available for the Cross Belt Sorter. The Cross Belt Sorters can be built as straight systems, or shaped to follow the contours of your facility. Your sorter can even go up and down as needed to provide clearance and avoid obstacles. Small footprint versions are also available.

DEFINITION contributed by GBI to: www.wikiMHEDA.org
A Cross Belt sorter conveyor is an automated or mechanized device that uses a short belt conveyor section on a moving frame(known as a car), with its direction of travel oriented perpendicular to the line of travel of the main train. The cars move on wheels along a track. When a car is at the correct location, based on the sort criteria as directed to the system controller by the WMS, the car activates an AC or DC motor that drives the belt on the car, moving the belt in a perpendicular motion to that of the travel direction. Communication to each car is achieved via RF or IR from a host processor. Once the car activates, the product or item being sorted is delivered into a chute or takeaway lane on either side of the sorter. The drop spacing on a cross belt sorter conveyor is normally smaller than what would be required on a tilt tray sorter because of the positive deployment of the product using the moving belt; the tray being replaced by a short belt conveyor section (on the car). Product or items may be inducted manually or using automatic induction onto the sorter
